Dealerships & Used Cars

New cars come from player-owned franchise dealerships, and second-hand cars from used car firms. This guide covers buying a car, owning a dealership, running a used car lot, and how scrapping and mileage affect what a car is worth.

🚗
Buying a new car
Brand new, 0 miles
Go to a dealership
Each dealership sells one kind of vehicle - budget, muscle, sports, utility, bikes or boats. Stand on the pickup at the entrance and use /dealership.
Pick a model
Browse the catalogue and choose the vehicle you want. At a dealership with an owner, every model shows how many are left, or OUT OF STOCK if the owner needs to order more.
Pay and drive away
The price comes out of your cash and the new car appears at the dealership's delivery point with 0 miles on it. It counts towards your vehicle slots (check them with /myslots).
Premium discounts still apply. Silver members pay 10% less and Gold members 20% less. The discount never costs the dealership owner anything: the owner is paid the full sticker price either way.
A dealership with no owner never sells out. Until a player takes one over, every model is always available.
🏢
Owning a dealership
Applied for, not registered at the Red County Administration Building

The franchise dealerships are the main new-car sellers of the county, so they can't be started from scratch like a firm. Staff set them up, and when one has no owner you apply with /dealerapply. An admin reviews the applications and picks an owner. You can own one dealership at a time.

What you start with
$0in the dealership bank, so there is nothing to withdraw that you didn't earn
Stocka starting supply of every model, set by staff - fewer of the expensive ones
70%of the sticker price is what you pay the manufacturer to restock
How the money works
  • You don't have to sell anything yourself. Players buy straight from the dealership with /dealership, and every sale pays the full sticker price into your dealership bank.
  • Your only job is ordering stock. Use /dealerorder at the dealership to buy more of a model at 70% of its sticker price, paid from the dealership bank. You can hold up to 10 of any one model.
  • When a model sells out, nobody can buy it until you order more. You're told in chat when a car sells and when you run out.
  • Sales fund your next orders, so a dealership that keeps selling can keep restocking itself. The difference between what you pay the manufacturer and what customers pay is your profit.
  • Use /dealerbank withdraw to take your earnings out as cash.
Don't disappear. If you stay offline for 7 days the dealership is foreclosed. The remaining stock goes back to the manufacturer, the money in the bank is paid into your bank account, and the dealership is open for new applications.
🔑
Used car firms
Anyone can start one

A used car firm is a normal firm (see the firm guide) that buys second-hand cars and sells them on (the full used car firm guide is with the firm guides). Register one at the Red County Administration Building front desk with /firmcreate usedcars [abbrev] [name]. It needs no license, costs $85,000 and has room for 15 cars on the lot.

Where the cars come from
The scrapyard
Every car a player scraps waits in a pool at the scrapyard, tuning and all. At the yard use /usedpool to see what is there and buy one. The price is exactly what the scrapper was paid, and it comes out of the firm bank. The car appears next to you ready to drive to your lot.
Other players
Players can sell their car to you with /carsell. When you are the buyer you choose between buying it for yourself or for the firm, and you see its mileage and the scrapyard trade-in value to help you decide on a fair price.
Selling from your lot
  • Drive a car to your lot and use /usedcar price [amount]. It is parked where it stands, stays there after restarts, and gets a green FOR SALE label showing the price and mileage.
  • You choose the asking price, anywhere from 30% to 100% of the car's new price.
  • Customers stand next to the car, use /dl to see its vehicle id and then /buyusedcar [vehicle id], so there is no mistaking which car they are buying when two are parked close together. They need the cash and a free vehicle slot. The money goes into your firm bank and the car becomes theirs, doors locked.
  • Only your firm's members can drive the cars on your lot, so customers can't test drive them.
  • Buying cars and setting prices needs both the vehicles and bank permissions. Owners and managers have them by default.
Closing a used car firm is final. Every car on the lot goes back to the scrapyard pool and the firm gets nothing for them.

Scrapping & mileage
Real miles, real depreciation

Your odometer counts the distance you actually drive, so 60 mph for an hour adds 60 miles. Every car starts at zero. It is the number shown on your speedometer and on the label of a car for sale.

The scrapyard pays you a share of the car's new price, and the more miles it has done the less it is worth. For a car that cost $40,000 new:

Miles drivenShare of the new priceScrap value
Up to 10050%$20,000
1,000about 44%about $17,600
2,000about 36%about $14,400
3,000about 28%about $11,200
4,000 or more20%$8,000
  • Scrap a car with /carscrap while driving it at a scrapyard. Cars, boats and aircraft each have their own yard.
  • Empty the trunk first. Weapons, drugs and anything else stored in it can't be scrapped along with the car.
  • You can't scrap a car with unpaid citations.
  • A scrapped car isn't destroyed. It goes into the pool for a used car firm to buy, and a firm pays what you were paid.
  • If you would rather get a better price, sell the car yourself with /carsell, or to a used car firm.
